About Dr Mel Fung

Dr Mel Fung has been a psychologist for over 20 years with extensive experience in both research and psychotherapy. In her early career, she worked in the area of problem gambling and enjoyed helping people address the underlying issues driving their behaviours. It was during this time that she also developed a passion to incorporate her Christian beliefs with her practice, leading her to advertise as a Christian psychologist. This created the opportunity to speak freely about clients' concerns within a Christian framework. Mel enjoys helping people seek spiritual growth in the midst of pain and suffering.

  • Bachelor Psychology (Honours) from University of Sydney.

  • Doctor or Psychology (Counselling) from Macquarie University.

  • Diploma of Bible & Mission from Moore Theological College.

  • Masters of Theological Studies from Sydney Missionary & Bible College.​

Research

Mel has a particular interest in body related issues, including body image, eating disorders and gender dysphoria. She has conducted extensive research into body image and gender identity.

  • Christians with Gender Incongruence: What Has Been Helpful and Unhelpful in the Church Setting​

Other Background

Over the course of her career, Mel has conducted training in various church settings on topics such as mental health awareness, anxiety and depression, body issues including gender dysphoria, and how to support people with disabilities. Prior to her work in private practice, Mel worked in university counselling, a psychiatric hospital and problem gambling centre. Outside of psychology, Mel has over 15 years experience in ministry to people with intellectual disabilities such as autism and Down syndrome. She is passionate about helping churches better support people from marginalised groups.
